The front of my house has a garage door with small light fixtures on each side. These fixtures were worn out and required replacement. An electrician was called in to replace the worn fixtures and install new bulbs. At dusk, I switched on the new lights and was amazed by their brightness, illuminating a significant area of the front yard. Now, I can see clearly at night without any concerns about stumbling over objects. Upon returning home in the evening, I can effortlessly spot the driveway.

Sometimes I feel like I am stumbling over worldly objects in my spiritual journey with hazards all along the way. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

Shine: to emit rays of light; to be bright by reflection of light; to perform extremely well; to be conspicuously evident or clear. Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

Illuminate: to supply or brighten with light; to make luminous or shining; to enlighten spiritually or intellectually. Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

Living a life devoted to God with good intentions is a noble pursuit. We strive to remain committed to following Jesus. However, challenges arise when the “world” interferes. Whether it’s a tough day at work, a disagreement with a colleague, an unexpected illness, or a canceled event, maintaining a positive outlook can be difficult. How can we stay resilient, take things in our stride, and avoid becoming bitter?

Our visible actions should bring glory to God. It’s important not to hide our Christian values in order to fit in with the world or to seek approval from others.

Do you keep your light shining? Is it as faint as a match, or as steady as a candle? Or does it glow brightly, guiding others to safety, following the path of Jesus.

Don’t let the things of the world pour water on your light.

How do others see you? Do they see a devoted follower of Jesus, or a part-time follower? Do they see someone who serves others diligently, or only when convenient? Do they see a caring, compassionate person, or someone insincere about their feelings for others?

Are you a match? Flash-light? or Lighthouse?
