While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.” Matthew 9:10-12
Jesus dined with sinners to demonstrate that God’s love is all-encompassing and accessible to all, regardless of their history. This illustrates the fundamental Gospel message that repentance and belief in Him result in forgiveness and everlasting life.
Jesus’ deeds mirrored the parables He shared, aiming to heal the spiritually ailing rather than just the virtuous. His outreach to those in dire need of His message of repentance, forgiveness, and redemption, alongside the shared meals, served as poignant lessons on God’s grace and the celebration in Heaven for every sinner who turns back to righteousness.
Do we tend to avoid those who are different from us? Do we make an effort to help those in need? Sometimes, a simple smile or a friendly “hello” as we pass by someone can make a difference. It’s important to acknowledge others. This week, step out of your comfort zone by helping someone in need. Alternatively, engage in a conversation with someone you typically wouldn’t even notice.
