Several years ago, I watched a series called Dharma and Greg staring Jenna Elfman and Thomas Gibson. Dharma’s mother was played by Mimi Kennedy, who now plays Marjorie on Mom. To very briefly sum up the series, Greg was from a wealthy family and Dharma was raised in a commune with hippie parents. In one episode, to the best of my recollection, Dharma was experiencing negative feelings. Her mother told her to put the negative feeling in a bubble and blow it away.
I know this does not do justice to the sitcom nor the scene I am describing. However, it has stuck with me over the years and I have adapted the habit of enclosing problems in a bubble and blowing them away, more specifically, blowing them to God. For example: When my husband lost his job, I was working part time. This part time job did not offer health insurance nor the opportunity to transition into full time. I did worry about the loss of income and loss of health insurance for our family. Then one day, I decided I was being ridiculous and begged God to forgive me for not trusting Him to take care of us. I prayed for a full time job and I prayed for my husband a new job. I visualized all this in a bubble and blew the bubble up to God.
Shortly thereafter, I received a call for a full-time job with benefits. I had placed an application with them so long ago, I had forgotten. The company was going through old applications and liked my resume and gave me a call. Now tell me God did not get my bubble!
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6
I am a visual person and the “bubble” works for me. It may seem silly but you get the idea. Give God your burdens.
Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer. Psalm 4:1 NIV
