Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105 NIV
Lamp: a device for giving light, either one consisting of an electric bulb together with its holder and shade or cover, or one burning gas or a liquid fuel and consisting of a wick or mantle and a glass shade
- Lights our path
- Keeps us from stumbling
- Keeps us from wandering off the path
- Allows us to see danger
Over my lifetime, I have used a variety of lamps, candles and flashlights. Each has a different area or range that is illuminated. The small flashlight, I carry in my purse, does not light up the same distance as the 9-volt camping lantern.
During Biblical times, a lamp was made of clay, filled with olive oil. One end of a flax wick was placed in the bowl with the other end hanging over the rim. The flame did not illumine a large area. Moving around would be slow and holding the lamp, you could only see about one or two steps ahead.
I cannot see the big picture God has planned for me, so I try to make my way along the path of life by myself. What a huge mistake! I stumble, wander off the path and, sometimes, find myself in danger. God knows what He has planned for me. I just need to trust Him and take one step at a time. God guiding me is like the clay lamp. It only reveals a short distance at a time.
