My Daddy’s favorite hymn was Bless Be the Tie That Binds. I liked it because the melody was catchy.
It was written by John Fawcett from Yorkshire, England. He was orphaned at 12 years old and became a Christian at 16. Fawcett was an apprentice to a tailor but followed his calling into the ministry. He was a pastor to a small, poor Baptist congregation and, after seven years, was offered a large affluent church in London. On the day he was to leave and move to London, the small country congregation begged him to stay. Fawcett wrote Bless Be the Tie That Binds to remember the reason why he chose to turn down prestige and profit and remain bound to the poor. Christianity.com
The hymn talks about the unity of Christians. How we share each other’s burdens and are there through bad times to provide comfort. Read the lyrics. Listen to the song.
As a community of believers do we do this now? When things get tough, are we there for each other or do we just “mind our own business”?
Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Romans 12:15
Let brotherly love continue. Hebrews 13:1
Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2
Over the following week, I am going make an extra effort to live up to Daddy’s favorite hymn.
