Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Psalms 23:4 KJV

A valley or deep ravine can be very dangerous to sheep. The shepherd uses his rod / staff to nudge the sheep that go astray.

We are like the sheep. Even though we go astray, God protects us. God will rescue us, guide us, protect us — so I should not be afraid.

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Psalm 27:1 KJV

It is our nature to want to be in control of our own life. Usually, when I am in control, I make the wrong decision. When I look to God for guidance, I can make a better decision. I would say the right decision, but most of the time I still need to add a little of my own desires. However, when I truly meditate on Scripture and listen, the right decision will come to me.
