Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Psalm 23:5 KJV
Servants would painstakingly prepare a feast for a peaceful occasion. Just like we do today, the people wanted to sit and enjoy the meal and the company.
If there was a huge spread of food on the table and everyone was eating and socializing, then the enemy would be able to sneak up and overtake them. It was very important to be vigilant and not let their guard down when the enemy was around. Warriors needed to be ready to defend their property at all times.
In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord , make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8 NIV
Even when I are surrounded by my enemies, I am safe “to sit, relax and eat”. God provides the bounty to feed me and the power to protect me.
Anoint: : to put oil on (someone) as part of a religious ceremony. Merriam Webster Online Dictionary, October 28, 2019.
To show love and respect, the host would anoint the guests with oils. The aromatic oils would give comfort as the host offered blessings on them.
Also, the host would make sure all the guests had plenty of wine. My cup runneth over can be compared to the bounty in our life. When I stop and think of all the blessings I have received, I know my cup runneth over.
